University of Michigan EARTH eNews: August 2019

Dear Alumni and Friends,
Summer has flown past. The Ann Arbor Art Fair-complete with the traditional thunderstorms-is a thing of the past. In just a few weeks a new cohort of students will begin their time at Michigan. We're looking forward to renewing acquaintances at Camp Davis for the 90th Anniversary Reunion & Student Cabin and Recreation Hall Dedication. It runs from August 16th to the 22nd. You can follow the event on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Sincerely, Adam Simon and Kacey Lohmann

Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School-Ghana

Faculty members Brian Arbic and Adam Simon along with alumna Paige Martin (PhD 2019), PhD students Madelyn Cook and Jackie Wrage and colleagues from Oregon State, Scripps, NASA, WHOI, University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of New Orleans organized and taught their annual STEM capacity building Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Accra, Ghana. Participants this year included undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals from Ghana, Liberia, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Togo. We were delighted to have with us former postdoctoral researcher Joseph Ansong who is now a professor at the University of Ghana and alumnus Daniel Korfeh (MS 2016) who is now an Instructor at the University of Liberia.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Award Winner

Undergraduate student Elizabeth Ratajczyk earned a prize for her research presentation at the summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) symposium. Elizabeth worked with Madeleine Frank, also an Earth & Environmental Sciences major, to model grid-scale renewable energy for southeast Michigan, including commercial and residential electric vehicles and grid-scale battery storage. Their work demonstrates the feasibility of the Green New Deal.

Alumni Board Member Hosts Earth Camp Students on Their UP Trip

"We had the pleasure of hosting Earth Camp at our house at the end of their UP geology field trip last week for a real UP pasty feed and beach party. What a fantastic group of kids. Jenna and her staff of student instructors are doing such great work introducing the joys of field geology, and field trip lifestyle to them. I had some great conversations with some of these campers about furthering their education and possible career paths in earth and environmental science and I am pretty sure we are going to see some of them entering the ranks of geology students in the future. Also, the outreach of getting diverse students into STEM fields works both ways - I think I learned as much new from them as they did from me."

"So great job by the department, Tina, & especially Jenna, on running this program. Lets keep up the support!"
